Advisors Wanted for Documentary on Immigrant Students

The immigration film project, "A Voice to be Heard," is seeking a Montville representative to serve on its advisory team.

Tom Murphy, the highly respected former spokesman for the Connecticut Department of Education, was an advisor to the film project, "A Voice to be Heard," until his death in January.

He provided invaluable, initial guidance and met with me even as he was battling cancer. I got to know Murphy while writing about education for the Norwich Bulletin and also for the Connecticut section of The New York Times.

He will be missed for many reasons, among them the sincere support he gave to projects such as this film, which highlights the success of such immigrant students as the Tibetans who attend Montville High School. For more information, go to www.voicetobeheard.org

Former U.S. Rep. Rob Simmons, 2nd District, and a former operative for the Central Intelligence Agency, also is a member of our advisory team. He speaks fluent Chinese and some Vietnamese.

Katharine Allen, co-president of InterpretAmerica, LLC in Monterey, CA., which provides a national forum for the interpreting profession and hosts the annual North American Summit on Interpreting, rounds out our advisory team.

I am seeking a Montville representative to serve on the team. A minimal committment of time is required; we want someone who has common ground with this subject and is willing to spread the word about the project and give us feedback. If you are interested, please call Adam Bowles at (860) 861-4246.
