Christmas Postcards: One Woman’s Collection

Through a collection of Christmas post cards, a small window of Lucy A. (Moore) Rogers' life is revealed.

Lucy Abigail Moore was born in the Quaker Hill section of Waterford in 1876 to Egbert and Lucy E. (Hunt) Moore.  According to the Biographical Review of Leading Citizens of New London County, Connecticut:

“Egbert Moore (1830-1907), left home at seventeen to become a carpenter in New London. Upon learning his trade, he traveled to Philadelphia and then onto Charleston, South Carolina.  Egbert continued to move, finally arriving in San Francisco, California in 1853.  San Francisco at that time was a growing frontier due to the gold rush.  Egbert made his fortune and returned to Connecticut in 1857, when he married Lucy E. Hunt.”

Lucy A. was the Moore’s second child.  While her sisters married at young ages, Lucy did not.  Although she had her mother's name, Lucy inherited her father’s independence.  As a young woman during the American industrial age, Lucy lived with an aunt in Montville while working as a teacher.  She began keeping her postcards sometime around 1906.  Between that year and 1921, Lucy kept hundreds of cards from Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter.  At 42 years old, she married Azel Fitch Rogers.  Azel’s family is one of the several founders of Montville.
