Grill the food, not the house

Though we all love a good cook out, please be sure to do it safely to ensure no one gets hurt or jeopardizes your home.

Well, summer is officially here and with that, many folks will be firing up the grills to enjoy their favorite barbecues. Though we all love a good cook out, please be sure to do it safely to ensure no one gets hurt or jeopardizes your home. Here are some tips to remember when grilling:

1) Propane and charcoal grills should only be used outside.

2) The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and tree branches.

3) Keep children and pets away from grilling area.

4) Keep the grill clean by removing grease and fat build-up in collection trays.

5) Never leave grill unattended.

These tips sound simple, yet each year hundreds of injuries occur as well as homes being damaged by fire. Surprisingly, we have had an incident where someone was using a charcoal grill in the home.

Even following all safety precautions, things do happen. In the event of a fire, call 911. Do not move the grill as you may expose yourself to potential injury or spread the fire if it is tipped over.

Please be safe this summer with your grills. Cook outs are great for family and friends and we hope that we do not become "unintentional" guests.
