Contract Extension Leads to Debate Over Longtime Montville Officer's Health
A longtime Montville police officer's contract has been extended despite allegations of health problems by Town Council members.

MONTVILLE CT - A longtime Montville police officer’s contract has been extended despite allegations of health problems, the New London Day reported. The decision came after a vote by Town Council on Monday.
The council voted unanimously to extend the contract of Sgt. Dennis Mathers, 65, for a year, according to the New London Day. State law requires police and firefighters employed by towns to retire at 65 unless the officer gets annual approval from the local legislative body. Some council members expressed concern over Mathers’ health, with one member stating in an email that he was not in good enough health to continue working, according to the New London Day. Mathers was able to defend himself however, with many agreeing he is an asset to the town.
