DUI Wrong-Way Driver Stopped On I-395 In Montville, Arrested: State PD

Several people called 911 to report a wrong-way driver on I-395 early Friday morning, according to police.

MONTVILLE, CT — A Milford man is accused of driving the wrong way while operating under the influence on I-395 in Montville early Friday morning, according to Connecticut State Police.

Police said state troopers began receiving reports around 12:55 a.m. of a wrong-way driver traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of Route 2A in Montville.

As troopers were responding to the area, police said additional reports indicated that the vehicle, described as a Jeep Wrangler, was traveling northbound on I-395 southbound in the area of Exit 11.

Troopers were able to safely bring the accused vehicle to a stop in the area of Exit 14 in Norwich, according to police.

The driver, who was identified as 62-year-old Robert Sylvester of Milford, was asked to perform standardized field sobriety tests, which police said were “not performed to standard.”

Sylvester was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, failure to drive in proper lane, and driving the wrong-way on a divided highway. He was released after posting a $10,000 bond with a court date of Jan. 23.

“We thank the members of the public who called 9-1-1 to report this incident,” police wrote in a news release. “As always, we ask that anyone who observes a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction please keep a safe distance away and call 9-1-1 as soon as possible, as this is a true emergency.”
