Montville Education Foundation Golf Tourney Raises $9,500

Twenty-seven foursomes took part in the event recently in Griswold

The annual golf tournament took place earlier in the month at River Ridge golf course in Griswold. One hundred eight people – 27 foursomes – participated in the group’s primary fundraiser, said Linda Heller, Montville Education Foundation chairman, and the event raised $9,500.

Heller herself didn’t play, but spent the day raising money at one of the golf holes.

“Nobody got by me without paying,” she says. The $20 payment put the golfers in a 50-50 raffle; the MEF ended up with $800, as did one lucky golfer.

Another money-maker gave golfers the chance to employ Mike Svab, a pro, to put their ball on the green, if their own shot didn’t make it.

The $150 fee per golfer gave each golfer entry into all the contests. In addition, there were four levels of sponsorhips.

“We are thrilled, let me tell you,” Heller said. “We had tremendous support from our businesses in Montville.”

The game was played on one of the recent very hot, very humid days. But, Heller says, it was the group’s third tournament. It was 100 degrees the first year, mid-90s the second, and hot and steamy this year. A 20-minute storm cooled things off, but golfers still sweated.

All the proceeds toward the Montville Education Foundation’s grant program, Heller says, which is for all residents in town, not just for schools.
