Montville Inches Closer to a Vote on Independent Police Force

Organizers of a referendum effort say that, at this time, a new department would be too costly.

A petition drive in Montville calling for a referendum vote to thwart an independent police department is gaining some steam.

A total of 424 signatures is required to force the referendum, and organizers are expected to reach at least that amount this week, perhaps as early as today, Feb. 8, reports The Day. The signatures must be submitted to town officials by Feb. 12.

Organizers say that moving from the resident state trooper program to an independent police department would be too expensive for Montville taxpayers at this time. Last month, the Town Council voted in favor of creating an autonomous department.
