Montville Senator Releases Statement on Malloy's Budget Proposal

HARTFORD, CT – Senator Paul Formica (R-East Lyme), co-chair of the state’s Appropriations Committee, issued the following statement Thursday regarding Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s 2018/2019 budget address.

“On Feb. 8 the governor unveiled his budget proposal for the next two years. Unfortunately, the strategy of placing more heavy burdens on taxpayers and shifting the state’s problems onto municipalities is not the direction I believe our state should be moving. For example, I don’t believe it’s appropriate to increase taxes by over $200 million on working and middle class families. I also have serious concerns about the governor’s proposal to shift over $400 million in teacher pension costs onto our towns and cities, a move that will lead to property tax increases.

“While the governor’s proposal raises multiple red flags, we all have to keep in mind that this is only the start of the budget process. In the coming weeks I will be reviewing the details of the governor’s proposal more closely and exploring alternative ideas to put our state on a path towards stability and opportunity for all. In my role as co-chair of the Appropriations Committee I am dedicated to working with Republicans and Democrats to stand up for taxpayers and create a budget with a clear vision and defined goals for our future.

“I urge taxpayers to contact me with any questions they may have about the governor’s proposal. I look forward to working with my fellow lawmakers on policies that meet our responsibility to better our state today and plan for future generations.”
