New Year Begins with Connecticut Service Plaza Project More Than Half Completed

A $178 million dollar project to renovate the state’s 23 food and fuel rest stops on Interstate 395, Interstate 95, and Route 15 is 60 percent completed.

The project is being completed by contractor Project Service, LLC and the family of facilities are called the Connecticut Service Plazas.

Renovations have been completed on 14 plazas including all three on I-395, five of 10 on I-95, and six of 10 on Route 15.

Two plazas (Route 15 North Haven NB and SB) opened in 2011 while six plazas (I-95 Milford NB and SB, Route 15 Fairfield NB and SB, I-395 Plainfield NB and SB) reopened in 2012.

Another six plazas, I-95 Darien NB and SB, I-95 Branford NB, I-395 Montville SB, Route 15 Orange NB and SB, reopened in 2013.

The most recent of these to open were on Route 15 in Orange NB and SB, which opened in December 21.  

According to the Connecticut Service Plazas website, tenants at the plazas vary by location and include Exxon Mobil gasoline and diesel, Mobil Mart, Alltown Convenience Store, Fast Freddies, Statement USA, Best Buy Express, Dunkin’ Donuts, Subway, McDonald’s, Sbarro’s, Robek’s, Cheeseboy, Applegate Organics, Moe’s Mexican, Panda Express, Mac-n-Out, and Wilson’s BBQ. 

Additional amenities include family and traditional restrooms, tourism information, free wi-fi, dog walk areas, picnic areas, truck idle reduction technology, TTY phones, and ATM’s. 

Construction work continues on another six plazas closed for renovations.

As for 2014, Mike Modine, Director of Operations for Project Service, said that motorists can expect the reopening of the Route 15 Greenwich plazas and the I-95 Branford Southbound plaza later this month.

Modine also said that the I-95 Madison Northbound plaza is planned to open at the end of 2014 while the I-95 Fairfield NB and SB plazas are expected to open in the winter of 2014. 

The Route 15 New Canaan NB and SB plazas are planned to close for renovations “around February/March 2014 and opening at the end of 2014,” Modine added.

As for the Madison southbound plaza which hasn’t yet closed, “if all goes well, it will close in February 2014 and will open approximately in April 2015,” Modine explained, “The (entire) project should be completed by May 2015.”
