Rep. McCarty Promotes Private, Personal Care

Encourages the expansion of elderly home care and the establishment of Safe Haven Day.

HARTFORD – State Representative Kathleen McCarty (R-38) hopes to bring peace of mind to seniors and youth in need of specialty care services.

At a public hearing on Feb. 17, Rep. McCarty told the Aging Committee that the bill expanding access to home care ( H.B. 6716) resembled her proposed bill H.B. 5235, An Act Expanding Home Care for Elderly Persons.

“Expanding home-care services for persons who would like to maintain their independence by living at home is a laudable goal,” said Rep. McCarty. “The Connecticut Home Care Program offers a wide variety of home care services based on need, such as: chore services, home-delivered meals, mental health counseling and home health services to mention a few. In my view, it is a wonderful and much needed program that benefits greatly our elderly population.”

“This bill [6716] furthermore reduces the cost of care and will allow more seniors access to home care,” added Rep. McCarty. “I am a strong advocate for the welfare of the elderly, and therefore support this bill wholeheartedly.”

The bill is still currently before the Aging Committee, which is responsible for addressing all issues relating to senior citizens.

In addition, Rep. McCarty co-sponsors H.B. 5793, which was brought to the Government Administration and Elections Committee on Feb. 25. This bill proposes to establish Safe Haven Day on April 2, promoting awareness of the importance of safe haven services in Connecticut.

“In supporting the various needs to Connecticut residents, we will keep them from leaving our state to seek such services elsewhere,” said Rep. McCarty. “My goal is to assure constituents of their safety; we are always here, looking out for their best interests.”

The next step of this bill will be determined by the Government Administration and Elections Committee.
