The Perfect Prom Look? by Caitlin Marsh

With Prom season upon us, we may find ourselves stressing over our dates, our dresses, our tuxes, and all the loose ends left untied in order to make this junior or senior prom worth remembering. However, can prom season be causing some teens to be putting their health in danger?

We all know how dangerous tanning is. It increases our chances of melanoma, causes premature aging, and even eye damage. But hey, if it means looking good and standing out at prom, it's totally worth it, right? Wrong. Seeing as it is mostly girls that go tanning in order to look good in their dresses, let's look at a few ways to prevent these awful health effects, and still feel beautiful.

First, why not try a tanning lotion? Sure some of them give you a bit of an orange glow, but it is all about finding the right one. It may cost you a little extra, but from personal experience, the Victoria's Secret tanning gel works really well and does not leave you looking orange. As long as you carefully follow the directions, you will have an even tan and no blotches!

Secondly, embrace your own beauty! Odds are that the person who asks you to prom, thinks you are beautiful the way you are and doesn't want you trying to hide your natural skin tone in order to impress them or anyone else. This goes for any walk of life, also. The most beautiful people are the ones that accept who they are and truly believe they are beautiful.

Lastly, if it really is that important to you, go tanning as seldom as possible. One night is not worth the long term health effects that you will face later in life if you tan too often. I know that you want to look back on prom and like what you see, but health is more important than looking good in a dress that you are going to wear once.
