Uncasville Business Owner Pleads Guilty To Tax Evasion: Feds

Kathryn Pocock pleaded guilty to a federal tax evasion charge.

UNCASVILLE, CT — An Uncasville business owner has pleaded guilty to tax evasion, according to a statement from federal prosecutors. Kathryn Pocock, 58, pleaded guilty to one count of tax evasion at federal court in New Haven.

Pocock is the owner of Sunshine Cleaners, LLC, a home cleaning business. Pocock withdrew about $855,000 from the business from 2015 to 2019 and failed to report these funds on her federal income tax returns, according to the statement.

The investigation revealed that Pocock regularly cashed client checks that had been paid to her business, deposited some checks into her personal bank account, and paid her employees “under the table,” according to the statement.

Pocock wrote checks payable to cash from her personal and business bank accounts. She also paid employees in cash without collecting and paying over employment tax to the IRS or sales and use taxes owed to the state.

The investigation also revealed that Pocock provided her tax preparer with false spreadsheets and supporting documentation that significantly understated her income and employee-related expenses.
