WATERBURY, CT -- A city official has been arrested on forgery charges after police said he lied about his education and qualifications to get his job.
Bradley Malay, 50, of Killingworth, served as Waterbury's water superintendent.
Police were investigating water-related issues, including fire hydrant water-flow concerns.
The investigation led to Malay voluntarily resigning from his position after he was questioned about possible misconduct.
Detectives discovered evidence that Malay was untruthful during the application process, police said.
"Detectives determined that Malay intentionally fabricated and embellished his past educational and professional experience in order to meet the job requirements and appear qualified for the positions," according to a police statement.
Malay was hired as the assistant water superintendent in July 2023 and water superintendent in July 2025.
Malay said in a statement to WTNH News-8 that while applying for the job he did check a box indicating that he graduated college when he did not.
However, Malay said that his 20-year career proves he was qualified for the position and that he successfully led the city through "two of the worst catastrophes in its history," according to WTNH News-8.
But police said Malay would not have been considered for either position if he had been truthful about his education and professional background.
Malay was charged with two counts of second-degree forgery. He posted $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court May 12.
Malay's arrest was not linked to the original investigation regarding fire hydrant water-flow issues.
