Waterbury Blaze Displaces 17 Residents, Injures 3 Firefighters: FD

WATERBURY, CT — A large three-alarm fire Thursday night on South Main Street displaced 17 residents, and three firefighters sustained minor injuries, according to the fire department.

Capt. Edward Partridge said the department received a report of a fire at 472 South Main St. around 6:03 p.m.

First responders encountered heavy fire, and firefighters began searching the building and made it to the third floor until fire prevented them from going any further, according to Partridge.

By 6:39 p.m., scene command decided to pull firefighters out of the building due to its instability, and firefighting efforts continued from outside.

The fire spread and caused extensive damage to multiple buildings, city officials said.

According to Partridge, the fire was finally brought fully under control around 11 p.m.

Eversource cut power to the entire block during the firefighting effort.

The American Red Cross is assisting the 17 occupants who were displaced. The three injured firefighters were taken to the hospital, treated and released, Partridge said.

The fire marshal is still investigating the cause of the fire as of Friday.

Alderman Rafael Feliciano-Roman indicated on Facebook that multiple properties have been deemed uninhabitable, including:

• 11 West Clay St.

• 456 South Main St.

• 462 South Main St.

• 470 South Main St.

• 472 South Main St.

• 474 South Main St.

“Please continue to keep these families in your thoughts and prayers as they begin the difficult process of rebuilding their lives,” Feliciano-Roman said.

Mutual aid companies from surrounding towns covered the rest of the city during the fire.
