Increase In Scam Phone Calls Reported In Naugatuck: Police

NAUGATUCK, CT — Police warn residents to be aware of a recent increase in phone scams reported in Naugatuck.

In a Facebook post Friday, police said they have seen an increase in reports of scam phone calls in which residents are contacted by scammers falsely identifying themselves as a Naugatuck police officer or claiming to be from the "Naugatuck Police Sheriff's Department."

Police remind residents the department will never call someone demanding payment, gift cards, wire transfers or cash to resolve an arrest warrant, missed court date, jury duty issue, ticket or fine.

"And if someone calls saying you have an active arrest warrant that you'd like to verify, you're always welcome to come see us in person," police wrote on Facebook. "We'd be happy to clear that up for you."

Police encourage any resident in doubt to hang up and call them directly through the department's routine line at 203-729-5222.

"Please share this reminder," police wrote, "especially with family members or neighbors who may be more vulnerable to these types of scams."
