Waterbury Hospital Names New Vice President of Medical Affairs

WATERBURYWaterbury Hospital today announced that David Pizzuto, MD, a highly regarded physician who has practiced in the Greater Waterbury Region for over 23 years, has been named the hospital’s Vice President of Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Pizzuto, an internal medicine specialist who is also a former Chief of the Waterbury Hospital Medical Staff, will continue to maintain an active practice while he serves in this capacity.

“We are enormously pleased to have someone of Dr. Pizzuto’s stature and ability assuming this very important role for us,” said Stephen R. Laverty, Waterbury Hospital President and CEO. “His reputation among our physicians makes him an ideal choice to join the executive team and guide our decision-making going forward.”

In his new role, Dr. Pizzuto will be responsible for providing leadership and oversight for several key physician areas, including the hospital’s internally-based physician programs such as the Residency programs, Hospitalist program and the Emergency Department. Dr. Pizzuto will also oversee the strategic direction of the Alliance Medical Group, a Waterbury Hospital-affiliated physician practice and one of the largest private practices in Connecticut.

Dr. Pizzuto was offered the position after hospital leadership consulted extensively with the local physician community. Dr. Pizzuto’s name was frequently mentioned as an ideal fit for the post.

“He has been in the community a long time and is obviously well-respected,” said Carl Sherter, MD, who succeeded Dr. Pizzuto as the hospital’s Chief of Staff last year. “The medical staff looks forward to working with him in his new capacity.”

Dr. Pizzuto said he is looking forward to it as well.

“I care a great deal about Waterbury Hospital and its crucial role in serving our community,” he said. “I am proud to be working with such an exemplary group of doctors.”

Carl Contadini, the Chairman of the Waterbury Hospital Board of Trustees, said Dr. Pizzuto’s appointment will ensure that the hospital continues to meet the needs and concerns of physicians.

“The board is very confident that the medical staff is in good hands,” he said. “This is a good appointment for the hospital, its physicians and the patients we serve.” 

Waterbury Hospital is the largest private employer in the Greater Waterbury region, and serves a vital role in the economic vitality of Western Connecticut.
