Basketball Player Charged With Assault On Referee In Naugatuck

The incident occurred Sunday during a game at the Naugatuck Recreational Center, police said.

NAUGATUCK, CT — An adult recreational basketball game in Naugatuck got a little too physical on Sunday after a player assaulted a referee over a call, which resulted in the player's arrest, according to police.

Tyairus Z. Sands, 24, of Waterbury, was charged with third-degree assault and second-degree breach of peace after the 4 p.m. incident at the Naugatuck Recreational Center. No injuries were reported.

"Upon arrival officers found that a player pushed and threw a basketball at a referee over a call," Naugatuck police said. "The accused was taken into custody and transported to police headquarters for processing."

Sands was later released on a $2,500 non-surety bond, and he is scheduled to appear in Waterbury Superior Court on March 16.
