UPDATE: Crisis Counselors at City Hill School to Help Youths Grieve

On Monday evening, Jada Ivory, 12, a student at the school drowned in the Naugatuck River.

Update 2:15 p.m. Naugatuck Superintendent of Schools Sharon Locke released a statement Tuesday regarding the tragic drowning death of Jada Ivory, 12, on Monday.

“We are deeply saddened about the tragic loss of Jada Ivory, one of our 7th grade students at City Hill on Monday, May 11, 2015. The entire Naugatuck community grieves with and extends their sympathies to her family,” Locke said.

“City Hill principal Brian Hendrickson has brought together a crisis team to provide support to our students throughout this difficult time. Counselors from around the district will be at City Hill today and throughout the week and longer as needed,” Locke said.

Update 9:15 a.m. More details are surfacing regarding the drowning death of Jada Ivory, 12, of Naugatuck, Monday evening.

Jada was swimming with her friends in the Naugatuck River and started having difficulty in the 6-foot deep waters, reports Paul Singley, of the Republican-American.

Her friends, including Jacob Drost, 11, and Hailey Clark tried to save her, but the current kept pushing her down they said.

Hailey described to the Rep-Am how Jada tried to latch onto her shoulders.

Rescue operations lasted 90 minutes and friends and family went out into the water searching for Jada, who was a 7th grader at City Hill Middle School, the Rep-Am reports.

Jada and her friends were swimming unsupervised, and school officials are planning to have grief counselors available on Tuesday for students.

Update 9:35 p.m.:

The victim found unresponsive in the Naugatuck River was pronounced dead upon arrival at Waterbury Hospital this evening, Naugatuck Police said.

The victim was identified as 12-year-old Jada Ivory of Naugatuck.

The investigation into the events leading to the girls drowning are still being investigated by the Naugatuck police and no further details are available at this time.

Update 6:50 p.m. Naugatuck Police Lt. Bryan Cammarata said at 4:30 p.m. the Naugatuck Police Department received a call of a possible drowning victim in the Naugatuck River.

Responding officers were advised that a 12-year-old female was swimming in the river with friends and had possibly fallen off a rock into the water, police said.

Witnesses advised that the female was seen going down stream and that they observed the female’s head go under water, Cammarata said.

Naugatuck police was assisted by Naugatuck Fire Department and several other area departments in searching the river for the victim, who was located unresponsive just after 6 p.m. The female was located in the river and was transported to a local hospital.

No further information is available for release at this time however an update will be provided as soon as information becomes available, Cammarata said.

Previous reports said the victim was 11-years-old.
