Children's Community School Shares One of 50 Stories

To celebrate, CCS has decided to share some of the many stories that make up our history. They're almost at their 50 story goal!

Waterbury, CT - It’s not unusual to have former Children's Community School staff come for a visit and Dawn Werneck, a past social worker, comes in about once a year. She has recently moved and uncovered some things from her CCS days that she wanted to share.

Red Ribbon Week is an alcohol, tobacco, and other drug and violence prevention campaign observed annually in October. Dawn was always driven in her efforts toward Red Ribbon Week and in 2012 lead the school to win a title of most innovative program in the nation. She brought in tee shirts from a couple of the campaigns that she conducted over the years, as shown here in the photo with director Jeff Martin.

During the visit she asked about changes, especially with the progress in expanding to middle school. She remembered clearly how much parents wanted to keep their children at CCS through middle school.

We toured the building and at one point she stopped -- and started to cry. “You have done so much here,” she said, referring to the collective effort of so many partners in the improvements and upgrades. “You have no idea how hard it was just to get by.”

They were tears of joy and appreciation and we share in that sentiment.
