Connecticuters, Nutmeggers, Connecticutians: What Do You Call Yourself?
Lately I've been reading that those who live in Connecticut are nickname-less as residents. What do you call yourselves?
Sometimes, nicknames come easy. If youβre from Alaska, youβre an Alaskan. If youβre from Nebraska, youβre a Nebraskan.
But what about here in Connecticut? Lately Iβve been hearing that we canβt agree on one nickname.
The Connecticut State Library knows what Iβm talking about: βThere is not, however, any nickname that has been officially adopted by the state for its residents.β

Now I know this isnβt tried-and-true science, but Iβd love to know what you think. Hereβs a sampling of Connecticut-centric nicknames I found online.
- Connecticuters (Merriam-Websterβs definition)
- Nutmeggers
- Connecticutians
- Connecticuties
- Connecticutlets
- Connectikite
Seemingly less popular were these terms βΒ Cotton Mather called us "Connecticotians" and Samuel Peters referred to us as "Connecticutensian.β (Say that five times fast.) This was in 1702 and 1781, respectively, so I guess that makes those old-fashioned?
