“Fractured Fairy Tales” Coming Up at Wilby High School

A little background: In August of 2021, a team of Creative Writing and Drama teachers came together to facilitate a huge project- to write and adapt an original play for stage. The play is called, “Fractured Fairy Tales” about fairy tale characters whose worlds are shattered by the Snow Queen’s loss of control. The villains take advantage of the situation and there is a race to return the fairy tales back to their original condition. Will the Snow Queen and her friends be able to fix what they broke? Or will the villains prevail?
The vision for the play was not a small one, but the teachers believed that they could motivate their students to do something worthwhile. The project started with an idea- to break the fairy tale. Students worked in their Creative Writing classes, facilitated by Lauren Franks-Blanchard and Andrea Cuadrado, to create a major idea, dialogue and stage directions for a broken fairy tale story. After much collaboration and editing, the Creative Writing students handed over their creations to be tied together and adapted for the stage, complete with new, original music crafted by Music and Drama students. “Wilby High School is known for its unique style of storytelling. The Drama program may not have a huge budget, but it is resourceful and creative. We collaborate, learn from each other and are not afraid to take risks.” says Director, Stephanie LaBonte. Former Wilby High School student turned teacher, Marquis Harris, joins the director team this year as well, lending to the cohesiveness of the production. The production will take place May 6, 2022 at 6pm in the Wilby High School Auditorium.
