Garage, 2 Cars Destroyed By Fire In Naugatuck: FD

Fire officials said crews responded to multiple brush and grass fires during a "busy weekend" in Naugatuck.

NAUGATUCK, CT — A garage and two cars were destroyed by a fire, one of six reported during a "busy weekend" for the Naugatuck Fire Department.

In a Facebook post Monday, fire officials said the department responded to six uncontained bush\grass fires and "one open burning in a burn barrel" over the weekend.

According to the department, of the six fires, one damaged the corner of a house and another destroyed a four-car garage and two cars.

Fire officials said discarded cigarettes were most likely the cause of three of the fires, including the two with property damage.

Another one of the fires was caused by the property owner burning brush, which came close to burning their house, according to the department.

"Burning of brush, leaves, grass or trash is not allowed," Naugatuck fire officials wrote on Facebook. "Cigarette butts tossed on the ground can ignite dried leaves and grass, especially when we have conditions like this past weekend-low humidity and windy."
