Naugatuck Announces 2023-24 Teacher Of The Year

NAUGATUCK, CT — Naugatuck Public Schools recently named elementary school counselor Mary Cuan as the district's 2023-2024 Teacher of the Year.

In a Facebook post, district officials said Cuan, a school counselor at Andrew Avenue Elementary School, was chosen as Teacher of the Year for her demonstration of "exceptional dedication, creativity and passion for education," as well as making a significant impact on students, colleagues and the entire school community.

"Mary epitomizes Naugatuck's values and visions and exemplifies what it means to be an outstanding educator," a colleague said in Cuan's nomination. "Students are at the center of every decision that she makes, continually going above and beyond to ensure the most positive school experience for all learners. She is passionate about leading her colleagues and does not hesitate to assist in any and all situations, not only at Andrew Avenue but beyond. Families, colleagues and students seek Mary out and her relationships with them make an impact that last well beyond their time at elementary school. I could truly go on forever about Mary. She is a gift to work with and to know."
