NAUGATUCK, CT — The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Naugatuck is currently at 167 and 58 people have tested negative. There is one confirmed Naugatuck death as a result of COVID-19 and one probable death as well, according to the Naugatuck Valley Health District.

The Naugatuck Valley Health District explains the difference between a confirmed COVID-19 death as opposed to a probable coronavirus related death.

"For public health surveillance, laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 associated deaths are defined as patients who tested positive for COVID-19 around the time of death; this is not a determination of the cause of death. The health district does not have further details including whether there may have been underlying health issues or other contributing factors. Please see Table 2 as well as in the chart titled “Laboratory-Confirmed COVID-19 Associated Deaths by Date of Death” for additional data."

"On April 10, 2020, the State Department of Public Health started to include COVID-19 deaths that are not laboratory-confirmed in daily reporting. NVHD will now report on COVID-19 associated deaths including both a) persons who tested positive for COVID-19 around the time of death (laboratory-confirmed) and b) persons who were not tested for COVID-19 whose death certificate lists COVID-19 disease as a cause of death or as a significant condition contributing to deaths (probable) in Table 2.
