NAUGATUCK, CT - 2021 Class Advisors Matthew Rosen and Teresa Obedzinski, in conjunction with the Senior Class Officers, posted this letter to the Naugatuck High School community on Wednesday.

Dear Students, Parents, and Community Members,

The 2021 prom season is quickly approaching. The current state of the Covid-19 pandemic has created some challenges for our traditional senior class activities. After consulting with our principal and superintendent, speaking with our prom venue (the Aqua Turf Club in Southington, CT), and reaching out to other prom venues, it has been determined that we are not able to host a traditional prom at this time. While we are deeply saddened, this decision was made by taking into consideration numerous factors including the state of Connecticut Covid-19 guidelines for large gatherings, the Aqua Turf’s own guidelines for hosting proms/weddings, and the guidance from our school administrators. While this is not what we had hoped, there is still optimism that we will be able to host some events in the spring.

Our deposit is still on hold with the Aqua Turf for May 14th. If Covid-19 guidelines change and we are able to host a prom in a manner that is safe for everyone then we will continue to move forward with that option. As a backup, we have also secured Quassy Amusement Park on the evening of Thursday, May 27th for our seniors. In the event that we can not host an event at the Aqua Turf, this evening will become our prom night. If we are able to have a prom at the Aqua Turf, this night at Quassy will become our senior picnic (historically held at Holiday Hill each year). More information on our Quassy Amusement Park night will come by the end of March. We desperately want our seniors to have both a fun and memorable end to their high school experience but we also need to make sure that we do it in a manner that keeps us all healthy and safe.

Also, please keep in mind that things are constantly changing and we are open to changing our plans as long as the time allows. Once our plans become finalized we will update you all again.
One other item that needs to be discussed is the matter of class dues. Class dues are typically $30/year and are used to help reduce the cost of prom tickets and the senior picnic. They also pay for other items such as prom decorations, the class t-shirt and cap and gown, just to name a few. In previous years, students either paid $120 for all four years or $100 if they paid in advance. This year we have decided to only charge $60 for all four years. This is partially due to the fact that we were not able to host as many events as we have in the past while also taking into consideration how Covid-19 has affected families financially. If you or your child chooses not to attend their senior prom and/or senior picnic there is an option to only pay $30, which will cover the cost of the student’s cap and gown and class t-shirt. To those who have already paid your class dues there will be three options available to you. The first option is that you are given a free Class of 2021 hoodie. The second option, will be to have your extra $40 go towards your prom/Quassy ticket. The third option, would be to receive a refund of $40.

To help simplify things, here is a breakdown of what you’ll be expected to pay this year.
Please keep in mind that these are estimated costs at this time and are subject to change.
Class Dues (Cap & Gown only): $30
Class Dues: $60
Prom ticket: $80
Quassy Amusement: $50

PowerSchool will be updated shortly so everyone is aware how much they owe in class dues. If you believe you have already paid your class dues and know whether you want a class hoodie or a refund please reach out to Mr. Rosen directly. Lastly, dues must also be paid in cash or money order to either Mr. Rosen or Mrs. Obedzinski.

We thank you for your patience and appreciate your understanding while we navigate these uncharted waters.

Sincerely,
2021 Class Advisors

& Class Officers
