NAUGATUCK - On Monday, the Naugatuck Police Department announced the passing of retired patrol K9 Vane.

I will always remember meeting the handsome K9 Vane during a Cub Scout tour of the former Naugatuck police station. Vane was patiently lying under his partner's chair as Officer Kosky typed a report. It was fun to see him again when his partner filmed a Sunday Storytime during COVID shutdown.

After ten years of service to the borough, Vane retired to the couch in the home of the Kosky family. Due to the physical demands of the duties he performed, the German Shephard's time of service is limited, more so than those of the other K9s that work in Naugatuck.

K9 Vane in his natural habitat

It is with extreme sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of retired patrol K9 Vane. K9 Vane faithfully served the Borough of Naugatuck for 10 years alongside his partner Officer Kosky, before retiring in January of 2021.

Vane served our town faithfully, bravely and honorably. Vane was deployed on over 100 human tracks throughout his career; including tracks of violent armed suspects, robbery suspects, kidnapping suspects, suicidal persons, and disabled and elderly missing persons.

Vane never waivered in his dedication to our community and tracked many miles in harsh terrain, negative temperatures and extreme heat. Vane has been injured, assaulted and separated from his handler on some of those tracks but he never gave up.

Since 2011 Vane was on call 24/7, 365 and never failed to respond when called for service.

Vane spent his retirement with his handler Ofc. Kosky and his human family, but as we are all too aware, a dogs life is not nearly as big as their hearts.

K9 Vane passed away peacefully in his home on Friday May 20th 2022 surrounded by his family.

We thank him for his service and will never forget his commitment to our town and our officers. Rest In Peace Good Boy.
