NAUGATUCK, CT — Police are asking for the public's help identifying a man accused of placing a skimming device on a register at a Naugatuck store.

In a Facebook post Monday, police said the man placed a skimmer on a self-checkout register at a Walmart store Wednesday around 6:30 p.m.

According to police, a skimmer is a card reader that can be attached to ATMs and credit card machines.

The devices store data like credit card numbers and PIN codes. This information is then used to make counterfeit cards, police said.

"If you think you were a victim, contact your bank or credit card company's fraud department and report it to your local police department," police said on Facebook.

There have been a growing number of skimming devices found at businesses across Connecticut.
