Naugatuck Valley Health Helps Protect Families from Lead Poisoning
The Naugatuck Valley Emends Lead Program has been awarded $2.9M in Lead Hazard Control & Healthy Homes grants. Applications are available.
From Naugatuck Valley Health District: The Naugatuck Valley Health District (NVHD) is committed to protecting children from lead poisoning and making homes in the valley safe and healthy. NVHD’s NauVEL (Naugatuck Valley Emends Lead Hazards) program has $2.9M in Lead Hazard Control & Healthy Homes grants from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). NVHD is partnering with the Connecticut Children’s Healthy Homes Program to protect children before they are poisoned by lead hazards or injured by safety hazards in their homes. We offer services in our member communities: Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Derby, Naugatuck, Seymour, and Shelton.
The NauVEL program provides qualified homeowners and tenants with:
- Inspections and plans for lead and home safety hazard removal
- Financial assistance to remediate hazards
- Lead Hazards – $9,600 per unit (average)
- Other Home Health Hazards – Additional $ to address healthy homes issues.
Note: only units enrolled in the lead hazard control program are eligible for Health Homes funding

- Relocation assistance during construction
- Referrals to low- or no-cost home weatherization programs designed to increase energy efficiency
- Lead hazard and healthy homes education
Eligibility:
- Privately owned housing, built prior to 1978
- Occupant income of less than 80% of area median income
- For owner-occupant, a child under six must reside or spend significant time in unit
