NVCC Food Pantry Continues to Serve Students

Naugatuck Valley Community College's Food Pantry Continues to Serve Students with Support from the Community

WATERBURY – Naugatuck Valley Community College’s Student Food Pantry continues to receive generous support from local agencies and individuals in support of its mission to help students who experience food insecurity. Students can pick up groceries at the pantry or have them delivered to their home once a month. In addition, the pantry provides a Grab & Go opportunity for students to pick up healthy snacks free of charge during pantry hours.

Last month, the NVCC Student Food Pantry received an award in the amount of $16,120 from New Haven County’s Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP). Funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), EFSP boards across the United States determine how to allocate their funds to local human service agencies.

Mike Degen, Local Board Representative, stated, “New Haven County’s Emergency Food and Shelter Program local board is delighted to support programs like the Naugatuck Valley Community College Student Pantry fighting to end hunger and food insecurity.”

In addition to this generous support from the New Haven EFSP, the college held its fourth annual Food Pantry Run/Walk to support the pantry. More than 75 people participated in this year’s event and more than $1700 was raised. Dr. Christine Cocchiola, Professor of Human Services, noted that “Food insecurity on college campuses is a relatively unspoken issue. This annual run/walk brings the community together on our beautiful NVCC campus and raises awareness and funds that go directly to support efforts to reduce food insecurity for our students.”

The NVCC Foundation supports the Student Food Pantry all year through several fundraising activities. Sponsorship opportunities and individual tickets are still available for the Foundation’s third annual Leadership Breakfast on Thursday, May 5 at La Bella Vista in Waterbury. Bob Ley, Emmy Award winning ESPN host of Outside the Lines and E:60 is this year’s keynote speaker.
“Leadership Supporting Education is the Foundation’s largest fundraising event of the year. We are truly excited about this event where our local businesses, community, and friends of the college make a significant impact in the lives of our students.” Angela Chapman, Associate Dean of Development at NVCC.

The deadline for sponsorship is April 18 and the deadline to purchase tickets is April 22. For more information about sponsorship opportunities or to purchase tickets, contact NVCC’s Development Office at 203-575-8208 or visit www.NV.edu/Foundation/Event
