Obituary: Helena (Florczyk) Velezis, age 76, of Watertown

She worked as an accountant for Uniroyal Chemical in Naugatuck for over 10 years.

Mrs. Helena (Florczyk) Velezis, age 76, of Watertown, entered into the gates of Heaven on Thursday March 30, 2023 at Waterbury Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of George A. Velezis.

Helena was born in Colon, Germany on July 21, 1946, daughter of the late Anthony and Maria (Kantinsky) Florczyk. She came to the United States with her parents in October of 1951, first to Boston and they settled to Naugatuck 1956. She graduated from Waterbury Catholic High School and then attended college. She worked as an accountant for Uniroyal Chemical in Naugatuck for over 10 years, then to Colt Firearms in the transportation department for several years and finished her career at her husband’s company GAVCO International Inc as an administrator until her retirement.


Helena was a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts of American. She had a passion for Jigsaw Puzzles and enjoyed painting. She was an active member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. She and her husband were married three times; first by a Jewish Judge; second in the Catholic Church; and third in the Greek Church after converting to Orthodox, a true love story.

Besides her husband George of 55 years, she leaves a son, Anthony F. Velezis and his wife Kate of Carmel, IN; a grandson, Anders Velezis of Carmel: 2 brothers-in-law, James A. Velezis and his wife Ramona of Lorton, VA and Paul Velezis and his wife Sonia of Waterbury; 2 sisters-in-law, Elpiniki Gagas of Waterbury and Efterpy Velezis of Middlebury; several nieces and nephews: and grand nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by 2 brothers-in-law, Nicholas Velezis and Steve Gagas.


The family would like to sincerely thank the Visiting Nurses of Watertown for the loving and exceptional care given to Helena during her illness.


Arrangements: A funeral service and Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Monday April 3, 2023 at 9:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church 937 Chase Parkway Waterbury. Everyone is asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will follow in New Pine Grove Cemetery in Waterbury. Calling hours will be held Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Chase Parkway Memorial/The Albini Family Funeral Home 430 Chase Parkway Waterbury.
