Obituary: Irene C. Sousa, 90, of Prospect

Irene C. Sousa, 90, of Prospect, passed away at home on Tuesday, April 18, 2023 with her loving daughter at her side. Irene was born on January 26, 1933 in Brazil, a daughter of the late Inucencia (Teixeira) Carvalhais and Silvestre Carvalhais, both from Portugal.

Mrs. Sousa was a communicant of St. Anthony's Church in Prospect and Our Lady of Fatima Church in Waterbury. For many years she worked at Uniroyal and Peter Paul in Naugatuck before retirement.

Irene will be remembered as a kind, loving and supportive mother. She imparted her faith and best qualities to her children. Those fortunate enough to have known her enjoyed a very special gift of her love, devotion, awesome home cooked meals, and friendship. In addition, she had a very playful, silly side and did not hesitate to share that humor with others. Irene enjoyed crocheting and knitting, and was a gifted seamstress who would make dresses from her own patterns for herself and her daughter, Esmeralda, when she was a little girl. She loved being outdoors, raising chickens, and was an avid gardener who enjoyed sharing her harvests with family and friends.
Left to cherish Irene’s memory is her daughter Esmeralda Sousa of Prospect and her brother Aurelio Carvalhais of Naugatuck. In addition to her parents, Irene is predeceased by her husband Domingos F. Sousa and her son Anthony C. Sousa.

Visitation will be held from 9 - 10:30am on Tuesday, April 25, 2023 at Prospect Memorial/ The Palmerie Family Funeral Home, 122 Waterbury Rd., Prospect with procession to St. Anthony Church, 4 Union City Rd., Prospect for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11am.
