Obituary: James E. Hanley, 93, of Naugatuck

He lived in Naugatuck all of his life, graduating from Naugatuck High School in 1945 & immediately entering the United States Navy.

Naugatuck, CT - James E. Hanley, 93, died peacefully on January 9, 2021 in the VITAS Hospice Care unit at St. Mary’s Hospital.

Jim was born on September 14, 1927 in Naugatuck a son of the late Joseph T. and Georgina (Englehart) Hanley and lived in Naugatuck all of his life. Jim graduated from Naugatuck High School in 1945 and immediately after graduating, entered the United States Navy, where he served honorably during World War II. Jim retired from the Bristol Company, where he had worked for 40 years and also worked many other jobs, including at Breen’s and Norwash Shoe Store. Jim was an antique car enthusiast, an avid gardener and a parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Church.

Jim is survived by his brothers, Joseph Hanley and his wife, Alice of Naugatuck, Raymond Hanley and his wife, Barbara of Southbury and Robert Hanley and his wife, Mary of Newport, RI and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased by his brothers, William Fleming, James Fleming and John Hanley and his sisters, Germaine Hanley, Jane Howson and Betty Baker.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 11:00am at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 318 Church Street, Naugatuck. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery, Cross Street, Naugatuck. Calling hours are Thursday from 9:00am to 10:15am at the Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Avenue, Naugatuck. Everyone attending Jim’s services is required to wear a facial covering and to adhere to social distancing guidelines. To honor Jim’s memory, donations can be made to the Ecumenical Food Bank, 75 Spring Street, Naugatuck, CT 06770.
