Obituary: Joan Dixon, 87, of Bethany

She went on to earn her Master's Degree in Reading, and was a teacher for 30+ years, primarily teaching third grade at Andrew Avenue School.

Bethany - Joan Dixon, 87, passed away on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at The Connecticut Hospice. She was the wife of Robert Dixon.

Joan was born June 27, 1936, in Montclair, NJ, the daughter of the late Herman and Martha (Beisser) Breyer. She was a graduate of Bloomfield High School and Paterson State College in New Jersey, where she found a beloved group of lifelong friends. She went on to earn her Master’s Degree in Reading, and was a teacher for 30+ years, primarily teaching third grade at Andrew Avenue School, for the Naugatuck Board of Education. She often carried her lessons home with her and her family has fond memories of the “Word of the Day.” She was a member of the Congregational Church of Naugatuck.

After retirement, she and her husband split their time between Bethany and Bonita Springs, Florida, where she volunteered at Lover’s Key State Park and worked to attract and maintain their butterfly population. She loved having her family visit and spend many hours entertaining them. She also took up golf, mahjong and made many more wonderful friends.

Besides her husband of 63 years, she is survived by her children Julie Dixon, Jennifer Leigland and her husband Keith, and Pete Dixon and his wife Kelli; her grandchildren Nikole and Kayla Dixon, Dylan and Abby Leigland; her sister Susan Breyer. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her brother Walter Breyer.

Arrangements – A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at 10:00 am at the Congregational Church of Naugatuck, 9 Division St. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family and there are no calling hours. The Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Naugatuck is assisting with arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to The Connecticut Hospice 100 Double Beach Rd., Branford, CT 06405 or the Alzheimer’s Association, 200 Executive Blvd., Southington, CT 06489-1058.
