Obituary: Jose M. 'Zeca' DeMatos, 85, Of Naugatuck

Jose M. "Zeca" DeMatos, age 85, husband of the late Albertina "Tina" (Nata) DeMatos, passed away on Tuesday March 19, 2024 at St. Mary’s Hospital VITAS Innovative Care Unit surrounded by his family.

He was born June 2, 1938 in Pardilho, Portugal, son of the late Joaquim and Emilia Dematos. Jose was a longtime Naugatuck resident and moved from Portugal to the United States in 1968 with his family. He owned and operated New England Bakery in Naugatuck for over 30 years.

Jose loved the beach, vacations at Cape Cod, soccer, singing, and especially spending time with his family. He was a member of Portuguese Sports Club in Waterbury and Clube Uniao Portuguesa in Naugatuck.

Jose leaves his family to honor his memory, Joe DeMatos of Naugatuck, Michael Dematos and his wife Elizabeth of Cheshire, and Paula Michele Tavares of Naugatuck; his six grandchildren, Adam, Briana, and Austin Tavares, and Carter, Sydney and Lucy Dematos; several nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his sisters Gloria and Alice.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday March 25, 2024 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 2071 Baldwin Street, Waterbury. Burial will follow in Grove Cemetery, Naugatuck.
