Obituary: Joseph “Shoes” Scarpati, Jr., 84, Formerly of Waterbury

Beloved Husband, Father, and Poppie

Mr. Joseph “Shoes” Scarpati, Jr., age 84, , formerly of Waterbury, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, in the comfort of his home in Little River, SC on Monday, February 27, 2023. He was the husband of Loretta “Lore” (McGrath) Scarpati.

Born on April 23, 1938, in Waterbury, Joe was the son of the late Joseph and Lucy (Mastropietro) Scarpati. He was a graduate of Leavenworth High School and was a proud member of the U.S. Army Reserves. Working in the manufacturing industry, Joe had a successful career that spanned over 44 years. Beginning his career at Scovill Manufacturing as his father and mother did, Joe worked his way up from apprentice toolmaker to running plants and assisting with all aspects of factory operations including overseeing apprentice programs. He was instrumental in the process of moving several large companies to other cities and states and retired as a factory plant superintendent from the Torrington Company.

Joe was a lifelong NY Yankee fan and in his earlier years, played in softball leagues and bowled in leagues associated with company teams. He coached and served as treasurer on the Prospect Pop Warner Football Organization for many years and was a longtime member of the Watertown Golf Club.

In addition to Lore, his beloved wife of 38 years, Joe is survived by his sons Joseph A. Scarpati and his wife Charlene of Prospect and Mark Scarpati and his wife Beth of Southington; his daughters Donna Leshin and her husband Mark of Prospect and Deana Daponte and her husband Edward of Prospect; his nine grandchildren Christopher Piccolo, Nicholas Scarpati, Matthew Scarpati, Michael Scarpati, Brooke Leshin, Erica Scarpati, Anthony Daponte, Joey Scarpati, and Nina Daponte; and his three great-granddaughters Zoey, Jadyn, and Lumina. He also leaves his sister Genevieve Manfredi of Waterbury, his former wife Catherine (Gugliotti) Scarpati, and his lifelong friend Robert “Bobby” Accetura as well as several nieces and nephews.

Joe’s funeral will be held on Monday, March 6, 2023 at 9:00 am from Maiorano Funeral Home, 95 Willow St., Waterbury to Our Lady of Lourdes Church for a Mass at 11:00am. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Monday morning from 9:00 – 10:30am at the funeral home.
