Obituary: Joseph Vincent McAvoy, 80, of Watertown

After graduating from high school, Joe served in the United States Army for 22 years. He worked for with the Department of Corrections.

WATERTOWN-Joseph Vincent McAvoy, 80, of Watertown, passed away Tuesday March 14, 2023, peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones. He was the loving husband of the late Catherine Marie (Regan) McAvoy.


Joe was born in Bridgeport on December 15, 1942 and was raised in Rockaway Beach (Queens) New York. After graduating from high school, Joe served in the United States Army for 22 years. He worked for many years with the Department of Corrections for the State of Connecticut. Joe was an avid golfer, a lifelong Yankees fan, and lover of the ocean as well as boating. He proudly served as a past Commander at American Legion Post 195 and VFW Post 5157.

Joe is survived by his son and caretaker Michael McAvoy of Watertown; his granddaughters Catherine McAvoy, Susan McAvoy and Kayla Reardon; his great grandson Jaevonn Anthony; and his devoted companion Mickey.


Besides his wife, Joe was predeceased by his son Terrance McAvoy and his two daughters, Eileen McAvoy and Susan McAvoy.

Calling hours will be held at Hickcox Funeral Home, 195 Main St. in Watertown, Wednesday March 22, 2023, from 5-7 p.m. with military honors at 7 p.m.


Memorial contributions may be made in Joe’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital 501 St. Jude Pl. Memphis, TN 38105.
