WATERTOWN - It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our mother, Louise E. (Schmidt) Clark. She was the wife of Charles W. Clark for 60 years until his passing in 2009.
Louise was born in Queens, N.Y., daughter of Conrad and Louise (Letsizen) Schmidt. She graduated from St. Margaret's grammar school and Wilby High School in Waterbury. She worked at Howland Hughes for many years and then for Bank of Boston in Loan Control. She happily made her home in Watertown with her daughter and son-in-law on Lake Winnemaug. After being a "city girl" for most of her life, she loved and appreciated the beauty of nature by the lake.
Louise was very proud of her German heritage, inheriting her beautiful blonde hair and bright blue eyes from her mother. She had a flair and innate talent for fashion. Her style was unique and totally her own. Always dressed and accessorized to perfection, she was never seen without her signature lipstick--always a beautiful shade of red!
Louise was a devout Catholic and prayed daily for her family's well-being. She had a kind and loving nature and taught her daughters to be kind, to give everybody the benefit of the doubt, and to never sweat the small stuff. She was the mother who lit up every time her children were near. She loved her family with all her heart. Her strength and love will be forever missed.
Louise leaves to cherish her memory her two daughters, Debby Caruso of Watertown, with whom she made her home, and Jean Santoli, and her husband Fran, of Oakville. Also missing Louise will be her grandson, Fred Caruso III, and his wife Ashley, of Prospect; Ashley's parents, Bruce and Sherry Austin of Oakville, who loved her as their own and she, them in return; her granddaughter Stacey Bird, and her husband Nick, of Oakville; and her great granddaughter, Elizabeth Bird of Oakville.
In addition to her parents and husband, Louise was predeceased by her son-in-law, Fred Caruso; her sister, L. June Bowden; and her niece, Linda Bowden.
So with heart wrenching saddness I say goodbye for a little while. I can hear her saying, "Be brave."--I'll try. Auf Wiedersehen, Mom. Say "hi" to Dad and Freddy. Good night, sweet dreams, I love you.--Deb
Per Louise's wishes, the funeral Mass was private and she was laid to rest in Mount Olivet Cemetery, beside her husband Charles.
"If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain. If I can ease one life the aching, or cool one pain, or help one fainting robin unto his nest again, I shall not live in vain." by Emily Dickinson sums up Louise's life to a tee.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
