Obituary: Lucilia M. Titley, 82, of Watertown

She began her career teaching Spanish at Naugatuck High School in 1965, retiring from Wamogo Regional High School in 1997.

Watertown - Lucilia M. Titley, 82, died on Monday, January 9, 2023, at St. Mary's Hospital. She was the wife of John H. Titley.

Mrs. Titley was born November 9, 1940, in Waterbury, the daughter of Lazaro and Virginia (Barbosa) Marques. She grew up in Naugatuck, attended St. Francis School and graduated from Naugatuck High School, class of 1958. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from Southern Connecticut State College, class of 1965, which included a semester study abroad at the University of Madrid, Spain. After graduate studies in Spanish Literature, Mrs. Titley pursued advanced study at the University of Salamanca and the University of Lisbon. She began her career teaching Spanish at Naugatuck High School in 1965, retiring from Wamogo Regional High School in 1997.

Mrs. Titley was predeceased by her infant daughter, Marisa Elisabeth, and her sister Fernanda Walsh. Besides her husband of fifty-four years, Mrs. Titley is survived by her son Matthew, his wife Nichole, and her granddaughter Elizabeth. She is also survived by her sister Virginia Guimaraes, her nieces and nephews Virginia DiGrazia, Lisa Sigetti, Paul Guimaraes, Marianne Collins, Rebecca Lietz, Jeffrey Titley and Christopher Titley. Mrs. Titley appreciated the affection of her best friend, Patricia Pawlak, for nearly sixty years.

Mrs. Titley especially enjoyed relaxing by the shore on Cape Cod while at her summer home in North Chatham, Massachusetts. A love for European travel, particularly to Spain and Portugal, was a special part of her life.

Arrangements – A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, January 17th at 10 a.m. at Prince of Peace Parish – Church of the Nativity, 48 East Street, Bethlehem, CT. Family and friends are asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Watertown. There are no calling hours.
