Loving Wife and Mother

WATERBURY, CT - Mrs. Maddalena “Nina” (Barbaro) Laudano, age 72, passed away peacefully, on Tuesday, November 10, 2020, surrounded by her family at her home. She was the devoted wife of Francis “Frank” A. Laudano.

Born in Amalfi, Italy, on March 13, 1948, she was the daughter of the late Leopoldo and Antoinette (Salerno) Barbaro. She was educated in Italy and moved to London with her family where she continued her education. Living with her aunt, she worked in their family restaurant where she discovered her love of cooking and baking. She learned English and continued to speak English with a distinct yet slight British and Italian accent throughout her life. After moving to the United States in 1973, Nina worked as a seamstress for Lila’s Dress Shop and Dorfman’s Dress Shop. She later became an Insurance Broker for Prudential and various firms for many years. Nina’s outgoing and ambitious personality made it easy for her to try new business ventures. She also sold real estate and Shaklee Wellness Products. Nina was a strong woman and devout catholic. She was a longtime parishioner of S.S. Peter and Paul Church and a member of the St. Andrew Society in New Haven, the sister church to one in her hometown, Amalfi, Italy. She was very active in the community and was a member of the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) for several decades, and Sons and Daughters of Italy at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church and frequented the Lega Sicilian Club.

Nina had a very generous and charitable spirit. She could always be seen volunteering and helping others and baking Italian cookies for friends and family. She would always find extra money to donate to a worthy cause. Nina was very social; spending time with friends, especially frequenting local restaurants was her favorite pastime, but nothing was more important than the time she spent with her husband Frank, who was completely devoted to her and always took great care of her, and her daughter Mary. She appreciated the simple times spent cooking with her son-in-law, listening to classical and opera music and watching her grand dogs Sammie and Peanut.

Nina is survived by Frank, her husband of 47 years, her daughter Mary Graveline and her husband Leon of Prospect, her brother-in-law, Giuseppe Secondino, and her sisters-in-law, Jennifer Barbaro, Ann Marie Laudano and Sarah Salgado and her husband Artur as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends in the United States and abroad. She was predeceased by her brother Gennaro Barbaro and her sister Angelina Secondino.
