Obituary: Mary Ann Patricia Flaherty of Waterbury
At the time of her retirement Mary Ann was a member of The American Institute of Banking and a member of the Woman's Banking Association.

MARY ANN PATRICIA FLAHERTY
“Beloved sister and aunt”
Mary Ann Patricia Flaherty, beloved sister and aunt, of 81 Plainfield Drive in Waterbury succumbed after a difficult illness on Monday, April 18 at Waterbury Hospital. She was born on July 21, 1941 in Waterbury, Connecticut, the second of five children, of Luke Bernard Flaherty and Mary Pauline (Bolger) Flaherty. She graduated from St. Mary Grammar School and Waterbury Catholic High School. After high school she matriculated at a number of colleges and business training institutes to hone her skills in business. Mary Ann earned a Banking Diploma from the American Institute of Banking, as well as, a Banking Diploma from the Williams School of Banking.
At the age of 16, Mary Ann entered the world of work as a part time sales clerk at the former W.T. Grant company. After graduation from high school, she worked at the Chase Brass and Copper office building on Grand Street. In 1961 she began her banking career at the Colonial Bank and Trust Company as a clerk/secretary and served in a variety of staff and management positions over a 46-year span. She experienced five bank mergers, culminating in her retirement from TD Bank as Branch Manager and Assistant Vice President, in August 2007. At the time of her retirement Mary Ann was a member of The American Institute of Banking and a member of the Woman’s Banking Association.
Mary Ann was extremely active in the communities where she worked. She served on various Boards of Directors for the Chamber of Commerce. She was a very proud member of the Board of Directors of the Morris Foundation in Waterbury for twelve years, including two years as chairperson. In addition, she served on the Finance Board and Scholarship Committee of Our Lady of Loreto Church until the time of her death.
Mary Ann was a dog lover, a very social person and an avid sports fan, a trait she inherited from her dad who idolized her. She was a member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians and enjoyed bowling with the Elk’s Women Bowling League. She held season tickets to the UConn Football games and enjoyed watching UConn Men’s and Woman’s basketball in person and on television. She was a huge fan of New York Giants, The Boston Red Sox, the New England Patriots and the Boston Celtics.
Mary Ann was a good friend, who always offered her help to those who were in need. She was a loving and caring daughter, sister and aunt. She lived with her mom as a daughter, friend, companion and caretaker until her mom’s death. She adored her many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, who affectionately called her Annie, often showering them with gifts and treats and very often “baby sitting” them.
She was predeceased by her parents and her older brother Luke Joseph and is survived by her brothers William James of Cohasset, MA, George Frederick and his wife Kathleen of Fort Myers Florida, Kevin Michael and his wife Nancy of Torrington, CT; her beloved four nieces, five nephews, eight great nieces and six great nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday April 30, at 7:30 a.m. from Chase Parkway Memorial, 430 Chase Parkway to the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception for Mass at 8:30, followed by Inurnment at Calvary Cemetery on East Main Street. Calling hours will be Friday evening April 29, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
