Sal was in the construction business for many years and then moved into the restaurant industry beginning with the opening of A&W Root Beer in Wolcott in 1966. He later founded Perugini’s Italian Restaurant as owner and head Chef, along with his son’s and wife. The restaurant was a staple in the town for over 23 years.
Sal was a world traveler as he and Carmella took many trips together. They also frequented the family home in Italy yearly and Sal continued his trips well into his late eighties.
Sal was an active member and past Vice President of the Pontelandolfo Community club, where he loved to have his espresso coffee and play cards every morning. Sal was a horse racing fan and was a frequent flier at OTB and Saratoga. He was an avid hunter and marksman, giving him the name ‘Rifleman’ and taught his skills to his sons and grandsons in hunting together.
Sal’s garden was one of his passions and a work of art. Each year, one was planted behind the restaurant and at his home. He always had to be the first to have that ripe tomato and shared his bounty with neighbors and friends.
His family and grandchildren were the light and pride and joy in his life. His grandchildren called him the ‘Iron Man’ for his amazing strength and resilience to anything that tried to take him down.
Sal will be remembered by his ‘Big Bear Paws’, his big smile, and his love to socialize, visit and play cards whenever he could.
Sal was predeceased by his wife Carmella of 56 years and also by his son Salvatore Jr.
Sal leaves his legacy behind to his son Marco and wife Donna of Oakville, his grandchildren, Marco A. and his wife Jesse Perugini of Coral Springs, Fla.,Giancarlo Perugini and Rachel Landesman of Coconut Creek, Fla, Isabella [Perugini] Brown and her husband Jeffrey Brown of Newtown, Laura Perugini of Thomaston and MariJo Byram of Wolcott.
