Obituary: William P. Mecca, 79, of Waterbury

Bill was a teacher in the Waterbury school system for 35 years, having taught at North End Middle School for 21 of those years.

Loving Husband, Father, and Grandfather


Mr. William P. Mecca, age 79, passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by his family, on Saturday, August 7, 2021. He was the loving husband of Helen (Pritchard) Mecca.

Born in Waterbury, CT on December 31, 1941, Bill was the son of the late Domenic and Rose (Boudini) Mecca. He was a graduate of Crosby High School, class of 1959, and held a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Central CT State University and a Master’s Degree in Art from Southern CT State College. Bill was a teacher in the Waterbury school system for 35 years, having taught at North End Middle School for 21 of those years. He was a longtime parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Church, where he was a member of the Legion of Mary and Knights of Columbus.
Bill’s greatest joy was his family. One of his favorite places was his summer home in Brewster on Cape Cod, where he and Helen spent time with his family and friends. He was a model railroad enthusiast and his interests included art, architecture, and the restoration of old violins. A mild-mannered gentleman to all, Bill was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, who adored his family and friends.


Besides Helen, his devoted wife of 52 years, Bill is survived by his sons David Mecca and his wife Bernadette of Watertown, Paul Mecca of Waterbury, Jonathan Mecca and his wife Casey of Brewster, MA; his daughter Jennifer Cybart and her husband Neil of Middlebury, his beloved grandchildren Kaylie, Julia, DJ, George, Gracelyn, Robert, James, Violet and his granddog, Miley. He also leaves his sister Marguerite Hogan of Natick, MA, his aunt Kay Rocco of Waterbury, and his sister-in-law Susan Walsh of Brookfield as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

The Mecca family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Smilow Cancer Care Center in the Harold Leever Cancer Center. They would also like to extend a special thanks to Iris Simon, R.N. and the Hartford Healthcare at Home team for their exceptional and compassionate care shown to Bill.


His funeral Mass will be held on Friday, August 13, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church., 182 Robbins Street, Waterbury. Family and friends are asked to meet directly at the church. Entombment will be private. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions in Bill’s name may be made to: Catholic Academy of Waterbury, 386 Robinwood Rd., Waterbury CT 06708.
