Southern Connecticut State University Theatre Department and student troupe Crescent Players are proud to present The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe. Directed by Elm Shakespeare Company’s Producing Artistic Director Rebecca Goodheart, the production is the second since SCSU Theatre’s partnership with Elm Shakespeare in 2016 (Goodheart previously directed Much Ado About Nothing at SCSU in Spring 2017).

The play presents a cautionary tale of how a hunger to learn can go very wrong. Doctor John Faustus is the most respected student in the world, but his ambition to know more, and do more, combine with own fears and self-criticism to ruin it all. Journeying through time and space from the heights of enlightenment to the pits of hell with a little help from the wise demon Mephistophilis, Faustus has no one to blame but himself. But was it worth 24 years of ultimate pleasure and power?

The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus opens on Tuesday, February 26th at 8:00pm. Crescent Players is hosting an opening night gala and post-show talkback (“Why Faustus Now?”): English Professors Michael Shea and Joel Dodson (SCSU’s resident Marlovian scholar) join director Rebecca Goodheart and assistant director Molly Flanagan, with members of the cast, to discuss this production of the classic story and its relevance today.
