Report: Naugatuck Man Facing Murder Charges in Death of Stratford Man

The alleged incident occurred in a Naugatuck apartment in 2013, and the victim fell four stories and later died.

Matthew Chandler, 22, of Naugatuck is now facing murder charges in connection with the death of Salomon Martinez, of Stratford, who died in January 2013 after falling four stories out of a window on a Pond Street apartment.

Martinez was on life-support for a week before he succumbed to his injuries. Chandler was originally charged with first-degree assault, but last week a prosecutor told Jonathan Shugarts, of the Waterbury Republican-American, that Chandler would now face murder charges.

The fall occurred while Martinez was fighting with Chandler and Kyle Gonzalez, 22, of 10 Anderson St., during a party in a Naugatuck apartment.

A night of heavy drinking at a house party led to a brawl and eventually ended when 24-year-old Salomon Martinez somehow went out of a fourth-story window this week and landed on pavement 40 feet below.

The Republican-American in 2013 examined court documents unveiled in Waterbury that show a large party was held at 8 Pond St. in Naugatuck in which binge drinking games, such as beer pong, were played by several people. The documents state that a fight later broke out, leaving blood stains throughout the apartment and shards of glass on the floor, the newspaper reports. Witnesses even told police there were beer bottles thrown, and that Martinez smashed a large aquarium and hit a woman on the head with a computer monitor, according to the Rep-Am.

Police have not said exactly how Martinez ended up going out a window, which caused severe injuries from which he is fighting to stay alive. The court documents also do not reveal any description of how that happened, according to the Rep-Am. Police told Naugatuck Patch at the time that the suspects are not cooperating.

Martinez, who lives in Stratford, has severe injuries all over his body - some are internal - including bleeding on his brain and he is on life support at Waterbury Hospital. He would later die a week later.

Police have arrested two 20-year-old Naugatuck men in connection with an assault on Martinez: Matthew Chandler, of 24 Myrtle Ave. and Kyle Gonzalez, of 10 Anderson St.
