Retired Teachers Donate Little Free Library to Cross Street School
The goal is to improve upon low literacy rates with free books which might offset the summer slide when kids' reading skills may slip.
News release by George Macary and Cheryl Campbell
NAUGATUCK - At a CEA-R Membership meeting, plans were made to get involved with the Little Free Library Initiative. Kits were purchased, painted, assembled and distributed. Unfortunately providing these Little Free Libraries to every Connecticut school would be very costly. However, that being said, this is a beginning.
Little Free Library is all about supporting literacy by increasing the availability of access to books 365/24/7. The goal is to improve upon low literacy rates with free year long books which might offset the summer slide when kids' reading skills may slip. It relies on the honor system take a book and/or leave a book. Parents can be encouraged to drop off books that may not be used by their children.

This is a fantastic initiative that allows retired teachers the opportunity to provide school districts with another useful tool to promote and improve student literacy. Retired Naugatuck Public School teachers Cheryl Campbell and George Macary, who recently provided a Little Free Library at Cross Street Intermediate School, are excited about being involved in this opportunity on behalf of students.
