Several Apartments Damaged, 1 Injured In Naugatuck Fire

The fire department responded to the call for a kitchen fire Thursday afternoon.

NAUGATUCK, CT β€” Six apartments were damaged and one resident suffered minor injuries in a fire Thursday. The Naugatuck Fire Department responded to a reported kitchen fire at Southwood Apartments at 933 Rubber Ave. at 3:30 p.m.

Firefighters arrived to find flames visible from the door of an apartment and extending up the building's exterior.

Police assisted firefighters in accounting for everyone in the building.

The Naugatuck Fire Department requested a ladder truck respond and for Beacon Hose Co. 1 and Prospect Fire to provide additional firefighters. They also received station coverage from the Middlebury Fire Department.

Firefighters were concerned about the blaze spreading through the building's 18 units.

"Fires of this type require aggressive fire attack and search for fire extension in walls, ceilings and attic spaces," the Naugatuck Fire Department wrote on Facebook.

The majority of fire damage was confined to one apartment with five others suffering water and smoke damage. One resident was transported by Naugatuck EMS with minor injuries.

The American Red Cross and Naugatuck Emergency Management are assisting displaced residents. Five families were displacedwere displaced due to the fire, WTNH News-8 reported.

The blaze marks Naugatuck's third major fire in a multi-family building in less than three months. The others were in Lantern Park in March and on Wooster Street in April.

The Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of this fire.
