Storm Update: Schools in Session Today, 4 Percent Still Powerless

Naugatuck fire chief says CL&P will work on the major circuits first, then move to the individual homes where utility wires down.

Β

Naugatuck public schools will be in session Thursday, Nov. 1, for the first time this week,Β Board of Education Chairman Dave Heller confirmed.

Fire Chief Ken Hanks indicated that streets are now safe for children to walk on. He said all live wires have been removed from roadways and sidewalks, and that all roads have been re-opened.Β

As of Wednesday, Connecticut Light & Power crews were working to restore electricity to those without it, Hanks said. At 3:41 p.m. Wednesday, there were 658 CL&P customers without power in Naugatuck - that is 6 percent of the total in the borough, according to the company's website. That means more than 250 customers were restored within the past two hours, according to CL&P's calculations.Β

Hanks said power is being restored this afternoon (Wednesday) on Andrew Mountain Road and Evelyn Drive, where the circuit comes from Middlebury.

"The other area of concern that were are hoping to get to today is the Field Street and Millville Avenue area," Hanks said.

He said CL&P will be working to get major circuits restored first - or those that provide power to several customers - and then to individual homes who have lost power because the utility lines became disconnected from the house.

In situations like the latter, Hanks reminds people that CL&P requires homeowners to repair the weatherhead that attaches utility wires to a home. (See Wikipedia's explanation and picture of a weatherhead here.) Hanks said CL&P will not begin restoration on homes where a damaged weatherhead has not been repaired or replaced.

Hanks said it could be a couple of days before restoration is made to made to individual homes that lost power because the power line became disconnected from the house.Β

He also said the Halloween parade for local children will be held on Old Firehouse Road today beginning at 4:30 p.m.
