Waterbury Hospital Welcomes New Medical Director

Ije Akunyili M.D., appointed Medical Director of the Emergency Department.

From Waterbury Hospital: Ije Akunyili, M.D., MPA, FACEP was recently appointment Medical Director of the Waterbury Hospital Emergency Department.

Dr. Akunyili previously served as the Associate Medical Director at St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury where she oversaw ED operations. Before that Dr. Akunyili served as Department Chair and Assistant Medical Director at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital in Houston, Texas. She was also an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston Texas.

Dr. Akunyili received her medical degree from University of Maryland where she was a Dean’s Scholarship Recipient. She completed her residency in Emergency Medicine at University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston where she won the Michael Wainscott Legacy Award for an Outstanding Emergency Medicine Resident in Texas. Dr. Akunyili holds a Master in Public Administration from Harvard University and a Bachelor of Arts Degree Summa Cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Akunyili is a member of board of directors of the Connecticut College of Emergency Physicians (CCEP) and the National Emergency Medicine Political Action Committee (NEMPAC). Dr. Akunyili is the recipient of the 2016 Rising Star Award by the American Association of Women Emergency Physicians.

“I am truly honored to lead the talented group of physicians and advanced practice providers in the Waterbury Hospital emergency department. Our goal is to provide world class emergency care to our community” said Dr. Akunyili on her appointment.

Waterbury Hospital and Greater Waterbury Health Network CEO Peter Adamo welcomed Dr. Akunyili. “Dr. Akunyili joins Waterbury Hospital at an exciting time as we are planning a major renovation and expansion to our emergency department that will modernize and improve patient care,” Adamo said.
