2019 New Canaan Election Results: Kevin Moynihan Wins Re-Election

Here's what you need to know concerning the results of the 2019 New Canaan elections.

NEW CANAAN, CT — UPDATE: New Canaan First Selectman Kevin Moynihan is the projected winner in his race against Democratic challenger Craig Donovan. Additionally, Nick Williams, Moynihan's running mate, also won re-election to the Board of Selectmen.

Incumbent Selectman Kit Devereaux, a Democrat, also was re-elected.

Republicans edged Democrats on the Town Council, with the four Republicans Maria Naughton, Stephen J. Karl, Cristina Aguirre-Ross and Michael J. Mauro winning seats. Democrats Robin Bates-Mason and Mark Grzymski also won seats.

For the Board of Education, Republicans Julie Mackle Reeves, Bob Naughton and Carl W. Gardiner all won seats, as did Democrat Brendan Hayes.

Original story: The votes are now being counted as New Canaan residents wait to see if Republican First Selectman Kevin Moynihan was re-elected or defeated by challenger Democrat Craig Donovan. Additionally, other positions that were up for grabs included Selectmen, Town Clerk, Town Treasurer, Board of Education members, Board of Assessment Appeals members, Constables and Town Council members.

Polls closed 8 p.m. Voters who are in line before 8 p.m. were able to vote even after the deadline passed.

In other races, Selectmen Kit Devereaux, a Democrat, and Nick Williams, a Republican, also were seeking re-election. After the winner of the First Selectman's race, the next two candidates with the highest vote totals become Selectmen.

Both Town Clerk Claudia A. Weber and Town Treasurer Andrew Brooks (both Republicans) ran unopposed for their positions.

For the Board of Education, Democrats Brendan Hayes and Steven Eno opposed Republicans Julie Mackle Reeves, Bob Naughton and Carl W. Gardiner. Hayes, current board Chair, and Reeves are incumbents.

On the Board of Assessment Appeals, Democrat Barbara Shaw ran against Republicans Jennifer Donovan and incumbent David L. Hunt.

Seven candidates ran for four spots as constables, Democrats Edward C. Vollmer, Susan B. Edmands and Cindy Franco, versus Republicans Gregory Pepe, Darren Bruno, Mary Anne Mercogliano and Arvind Bajaj. Vollmer, Franco, Pepe and Mercogliano are incumbents.

Again, seven candidates ran for Town Council, vying for six spots. Democrats Robin Bates-Mason, Colm Dobbyn and Mark Grzymski, were up against Republicans Maria Naughton, Stephen J. Karl, Cristina Aguirre-Ross and Michael J. Mauro. Karl, Aguirre-Ross and Mauro are incumbents.
