5 Reasons Why Kids & Teens Should Learn To Code

In this article, we'll help you make an educated decision on whether it's right for your child to learn to code.

5. Coding improves persistence and resiliency

We’re not going to lie, coding can be tricky. However, overcoming challenges is the best way to grow as a person. Coding gives people a sandbox in which to fail, try again (and again), and watch their success unfold before their eyes.

The ability to code opens many doors in life, both professionally and personally. By having an ability many people excuse as, “too hard for me,” people who can code gain an advantage over those who cannot. You may have heard that, “tech skills are the most sought after skills in the market today,” however, that’s not entirely true. It’s the combination of tech skills with soft skills that really sets someone up for success. A developer who can code, be a team player, and communicate effectively will be a unicorn in the workplace.

3. Coding hones problem-solving & logical-thinking skills

Despite what you might think computers aren’t smart, they’re just extremely good at executing directions very quickly. Coding teaches people to take an abstract problem, craft a logical solution, and translate that solution step by step into a language the computer understands. This practice of breaking down problems and translating them into computer-digestible solutions will trickle into other areas of their life, as skills such as problem-solving, logical-thinking, and communication are strengthened.

2. Coding enhances creativity and gives people the tools to build their ideas

Creative thinking can be expressed through many different avenues, whether it’s a new soccer trick, a piece of art, an essay, or even a song. Knowing how to code gives people another creative path to express themselves. When someone learns to code, they are empowered to use this new skill to build any idea they have. Whether it’s a game, a website, or software coupled with hardware to create a product never imagined before, the possibilities are endless.

1. Coding converts people into producers of technology, not just consumers

A consumer views apps and technology through the lens of, “What can this technology do for me?” We want kids and teens to be producers of technology – to look at technology and ask themselves, “What can I do with that?”
